Perhaps you have been fortunate and have not been a victim of identity theft.
Personally, I was close to being a victim of medical identity theft during a hospital stay. I have listened to sad accounts of friends and loved ones who have had houses, motorcycles, vacations, and other items purchased in their names. One women was placed in a witness protection program when she was asked to appear in court (700 miles away) and prove that she was not the person who purchased the house that was now in foreclosure. Although we only think of credit when we hear the words ‘identity theft’, we now know that medical, character, motor vehicle, and social security identities are also up for grabs by thieves.
